PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Less than a week after Delaware County reached out for help with its food pantries, the Pennsylvania National Guard came to the rescue.
The National Guard dropped off 90,000 meals in Delaware County on Tuesday for families in need.
"This is for our nonprofits, our food pantries, our churches, our shelters and our municipalities to be able to distribute to their community," said Monica Taylor, vice chair of Delaware County Council. "They'll come pick up the amount of food they need and then they'll go and take it back to where they came from and distribute it to their communities."
Shelters started to run low on food supplies during the coronavirus pandemic.
"We have townships that had emergency food drives and had 'X' amount of food — and double the amount of families came out to get the food," Taylor recalled. "They didn't have enough for them, so they are just really happy we are able to provide food for them to get out to their community members."
With everything people have to worry about right now, Taylor said food shouldn't be one of them.
"We're just happy we're able to provide and help them with food resources so they're not worried about putting food on the table," she added.
