BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Democrats have taken control of the Burlington County Freeholder Board for the first time in more than 40 years. But one newly elected board member is out, just one day after taking the oath of office.

George Youngkin’s resignation was not unexpected.

The Medford Democrat suspended his campaign in the fall, after reports he had been arrested more than a decade ago following a domestic abuse incident involving his ex-wife, who later dropped the accusation.

He couldn’t get his name off the ballot in time for the November election, then suggested he’d serve if elected, then changed his mind.

Democrats still have a 3-1 hold on the board, and the party will select an interim replacement later this month, with a special election in November to fill the final two years of Youngkin’s term.
