“First, ensuring a conducive and open atmosphere for learning. Secondly, supporting our educational leaders in their planning. Thirdly, exploring the necessary backing to our schools through policy and funding. And finally, securing the continuity of learning in the new school year,” he said.

Masks will be required for staff and visitors, and urged for students, with social distancing.

Social distancing could lead some districts to go with online classes or staggered schedules or a combination of the two.

Their plans must be ready one month before a district resumes classes, and everyone must be prepared, if the virus spikes, to see schools closed again.

“Nothing should be left to the last minute and no one should receive an answer of ‘we’re unsure’ or ‘we weren’t aware’ to their questions. And we fully expect that districts will share their preliminary scheduling plans, especially as they pertain to any changes in school schedules, at least one month before the first day of school,” Murphy said.

The state announced 44 new fatalities, bringing the state total to 13,060 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths, and 1,854 probable deaths. With 524 additional positive cases, the state total is now at 170,584 cases.
