State Sen. Vincent Hughes said there was a flood of requests from grocery store employees, food supply chain workers and others totaling $900 million, and most people who applied were shut out.

“We just need more funds. We need more resources. We got a good way to distribute it. We just need more resources to get out to these individuals who are front-line folks trying to make a difference and put themselves in harm's way through this pandemic,” Hughes said.

He said people making the least amount of money who were most impacted were the priority, and Hughes is hopeful Congress will come up with more money to help others through the HEROES Act, which has passed the House but is stalled in the Senate.
