“We didn’t know how long they would continue. Traffic flow was impeded in and around the city,” he said.
Petri said the demonstrations also delayed some businesses getting ready for the “yellow” reopening phase.
“There were some issues that arose for the business community and they need to be able to get contractors in, take down boards of companies and get back up and running,” he said, adding that the PPA didn’t want people to have to worry about feeding the meters every two hours while they were preparing to reopen.
So starting June 15, meters must be paid between Spring Garden and Bainbridge streets, and from the Schuykill River to Columbus Boulevard.
In University City, the boundaries extend as far north as Arch Street down to River Fields Drive, and 30th Street Station to 40th Street.
PPA is encouraging people to use its meterUP app to pay rather than touch the screen at the kiosks, as to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
Enforcement at the rest of the city’s meters will begin in two weeks, on June 22. The time limits for residential parking permit zones will also be re-enforced on June 22.
PPA initially suspended on-street enforcement, except for safety violations, back in March, in response to the COVID-19 stay-at-home order.
Petri said he hopes the extra week’s notice will help businesses and drivers be ready.
