Philly-area animal shelter hosting a temporary foster program for the holidays

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A program where you can open your home and heart to shelter dogs or cats for the holidays makes a return.

It's the second year the Brandywine Valley SPCA is hosting the sleepover.

"So folks can welcome a homeless pet from our shelter into their family on a temporary basis over the holidays," explained the SPCA's Linda Torelli.

Torelli explained that families can choose two periods of time to take in the animals.

"Families can opt for a shorter period of time with what we are calling our Santa Sleepover. So that's obviously over the Christmas holiday that's a pickup Dec. 20 to the 23rd, and then returning the pet on Dec. 26 to the 30th. Or for folks who are home for the full week over the holiday break, they can have a pickup for the winter break Dec. 20 to the 23rd and return Jan. 2nd to the 5th," Torelli said.

You can select which campus — West Chester, Newcastle or Georgetown, Delaware — to pick up and drop off the pet.

She said it's a win-win situation for all involved.

"Overnights from the shelter any time of year have been shown to really reduce the stress for the animals. It's also a great opportunity for us to learn more about the animal to help them find a match. We are closed over the holidays, so to have an animal out in a home feeling the love of a family for the holiday is just better for everyone all around," she said.
