NORRISTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A 69-year-old Pottstown man is facing murder charges, after he was accused of strangling his 71-year-old wife with an extension cord.

The criminal complaint says Michael Hatfield told investigators that he and his wife were arguing in their North Hanover Street apartment on Wednesday. He said he grabbed an extension cord from a closet and wrapped it around her neck while she was sitting in a recliner in their living room.

According to the complaint, Hatfield told authorities that he killed her on Wednesday, but he waited until Friday to call police. When he called, he told police he had “hurt his wife.”

Once on the scene, they found her dead in the living room.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said even while stay-at-home orders are in effect due to the coronavirus pandemic, resources like Laurel House or the Women’s Center of Montgomery County are available to help anyone dealing with domestic violence.

Hatfield is charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder and possessing an instrument of crime. He remains in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
