PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Marathon has a new program they'll unveil Sunday at the race that's aimed at helping all of its 31,000 runners cross the finish line.

Marathons can be mentally and physically taxing.

When it comes to the physical part, it's up to the runners to make sure they're up to par. But folks participating in the marathon are getting some help when it come to the mental aspect of running 26.2 miles.

"Local sport psychologist Mitch Greene is leading a team of psychologists to be on bikes. They're there to cheer them on, if runners are feeling like giving up or maybe walking or even ending the race, they're there to mentally psych them," said the Philadelphia Marathon's Jennifer Sherlock.

Sherlock says those psychs will have on green vests and will be there during some of toughest parts of the race.

"Around mile marker 14, 22, later in the race when they need, again, an extra push," she added.
