The office is closed but it will process marriage license requests from couples in emergency situations, including a COVID-19-related health issue that could lead to death, a need to add a partner to health insurance, or a visa with an approaching date of departure.
First responders and military are also eligible.
The office will issue what’s known as a “Quaker,” or self-uniting license, that doesn’t require an officiant.
The process requires video conferencing capabilities.
The first step is to email a request for an emergency license to Caren.Berger@courts.phila.gov. She will email the necessary documents, which applicants will fill out and email back. Then, a video conference will be scheduled with Register of Wills staff.
The office is also offering virtual probate services but they must be arranged through a lawyer.
