'Safe Bars,' where employees are trained to curb harassment, emerge in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — They're called "Safe Bars," establishments where staff members are trained and certified in how to reduce the risk of sexual harassment and assault in Philadelphia.

Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR) runs the national program. It's popular in other cities, but here in Philadelphia, there are only four bars where staff members underwent the training and were certified.

Wallace talked about the training and what can be expected.

"It was a lot about reading situations," she described. "The main thing is we are not asking our staff to, like, go run down the street and tackle somebody, but it's about knowing about a safe way to intervene, to change the subject or pull somebody away from the table and out of that situation, and if need be, call the cops."

WOAR said among the benefits of the training is that customers who have positive experiences are more likely to return and tell their friends about your Safe Bar.
