PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The teen accused of shooting and killing a Philadelphia track star, who was about to head to college, waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday morning.

Taron Small has been charged with the murder of 18-year-old Kristian Marche, who was shot and killed the day before he was to start at Penn State University on a track and field scholarship.

Small, 17, will now move along in the common pleas court, and he is set to be formally arraigned next month on murder, conspiracy and gun charges.

Detectives say last August, Small and 16-year-old Byron Vinson were trying to break into a home on East Pastrious Street in West Oak Lane, where Marche lived. When Marche confronted them, Small shot him in the back of he head.

Vinson waived his preliminary hearing last week, and he is set to be arraigned next week.
