PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Union have a new head coach: Bradley Carnell.
The South African coach joins the Union after two years with St. Louis City SC. In his first year, he led St. Louis to the best-ever season for an MLS expansion team and won the Western Conference title. However, he left halfway through a disappointing second season.
Prior to St. Louis, Carnell spent five years as an assistant manager and briefly as interim head coach for the New York Red Bulls — the Union’s conference rival.
Carnell now becomes the fourth manager in the Union’s history.
The Union parted ways with longtime manager Jim Curtin in November after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Curtin had been at the helm since 2014.
