PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the first time since 1996, the Drexel University men’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament.

The Dragons won three games in three days, beating Elon in the final on Tuesday night, 63-56, and capturing the Colonial Athletic Association title.

Since the Dragons won that championship game, it’s an understatement to say things have been busy.

“It’s a blur for sure,” said head coach Zach Spiker. “It’s full. There are not many minutes to sit back and really contemplate other things. But it’s worth it.”

Drexel shot an incredible 57% from three in the tourney, getting contributions from everyone up and down the roster.

“It’s what you want in your basketball program,” Spiker said. “You want guys to understand their role and do the absolute best they can in their role, and I thought we had some guys who were all-stars in their roles.”

Spiker said going to the tourney is a big deal not just now, but for the future.

“You wanted to create this moment and experience and now that guys see it, people see it on national TV, and hopefully we have a chance to play some more games. It can only enhance the brand for Drexel basketball,” he said.

The 12-7 Dragons have a few days to recharge. On Sunday, they will find out their first opponent, when the tournament field is unveiled.

Spiker is grateful everyone has some time to savor this special moment.

“It’s so great for our university and our community. There’s been some tough times, but I think this is the shot in the arm that everybody, that every single Dragon everywhere is enjoying.”
