PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Eagles haven’t made any huge, splashy signings so far during free agency. With their salary cap space, as well as the state of the franchise, they’re not expected to.
However, they did make a noteworthy addition on Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year contract with 26-year-old Minnesota Viking Eric Wilson, a linebacker — which is arguably the positions least valued by the Eagles in recent seasons.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the deal is worth up to $3.25 million.
Perhaps the most talked-about move prior to Wilson was signing Audubon, N.J.’s Joe Flacco to a one-year deal. Yet, if all goes well with Jalen Hurts, Flacco will never see the field. Given the linebackers currently on the Eagles roster, it would not be surprising if Wilson earned a lot of playing time in the upcoming season.
Making plays was an issue for the Eagles' defense in 2020, but it wasn’t a problem for Wilson, who started in 15 games for the Vikings.
He recorded 122 total tackles, three interceptions, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. He re-unites with new Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who was an assistant defensive backs coach with Minnesota in Wilson’s rookie season.
He isn’t the only former Viking who signed on with the Eagles this offseason. There was also safety Anthony Harris, who was greeted by Gannon with a very enthusiastic handshake and hug when he arrived at the Novacare Complex in late March.
In addition to the Wilson news Wednesday, the Eagles announced they re-signed veteran running back Jordan Howard to a one-year contract. If he makes the team, Howard will be a solid backup for Miles Sanders.
The San Francisco 49ers announced they signed former Eagles quarterback Nate Sudfeld, who was the Eagles backup during Super Bowl LII and the 2018-19 playoff run. Unfortunately for Sudfeld, his final moment in Philadelphia was the infamous fourth quarter against Washington in the 2020 season finale.
And former Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz officially re-united himself with the Tennessee Titans as a senior defensive assistant, ending speculation over whether he take some time away from professional football after parting ways with the Eagles.
