PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two people are injured after a massive tree fell at an intersection in Bala Cynwyd Friday afternoon.
A massive tree fell off the hillside at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Old Belmont Avenue around 3 p.m. Its branches knocked out multiple streetlights and an electrical pole and crushed at least one car in a passing funeral procession.
“As we were riding down the street, I saw the funeral procession come through, and I was like, ‘Aww, it’s a funeral,’ and then all of a sudden the tree starts slowly going, and then it just drops,” said Lauren Richman, who was driving on Belmont Avenue towards the intersection with her husband just minutes before the tree came down.
She called 911 and said emergency crews arrived within minutes.
“By the time I got off the phone with the cops, they told me somebody was already en route, and you heard sirens, and they were already here.”
Richman said one person was extracted from a car hit by the tree and taken away in an ambulance. Officials said one other person was injured in the incident.
Belmont Avenue remained closed for hours between Rock Hill Drive and the I-76 ramp as crews restored the stoplights and at least one utility pole.
