PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police found two shooting victims just blocks apart in West Philadelphia on Tuesday. They are investigating whether there was an exchange of gunfire between them.
It was after midnight when police were patrolling and heard gunshots coming from 60th and Sansom streets. The officers found a 22-year-old man who had been shot in the abdomen. He was alert and told police that a group of men got out of a black or dark-colored SUV.
“A group of about three males approached him and shot him in the abdomen. And we believe that [22-year-old] shooting victim then pulled his own weapon and returned fire,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “At the hospital, he did have a semiautomatic handgun in his possession. He also has a valid permit to carry.”
There were 15 spent shell casings from two different guns at the scene, Small said. There was also a trail of blood, and a parked car was hit by gunfire. Police found a rifle under a car, but they do not believe it was fired. It was not immediately clear who the gun belonged to.
As police were investigating, they found out that there was a 25-year-old shooting victim at an apartment not even a half-mile away at 60th and Pine streets. He was grazed in the head and taken to the hospital, where he was also listed in stable condition.
Police are investigating a potential link between the victims and a motive for the shooting.
