PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 9-year-old boy is injured and a man in his thirties is dead after a shooting in North Philadelphia Friday.

Police say around 6:20 p.m., on North 12th Street, two people inside a black Jeep Cherokee got out of the car and opened fire.

The 33-year-old man, who police believe was targeted, took cover and jumped into a Hyundai Sonata where another man and the 9-year-old were already inside, according to our partners at NBC10.

"It does appear at this time that person, once he realized what was happening, he attempted to run for cover seeing a vehicle that was stationary but running. He got in that vehicle. It’s unclear whether he knew the people in the vehicle or not," said Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace.

Shots were then fired at the Hyundai — the 9-year-old was hit in the leg; the 33-year-old was shot several times. The people from inside the Jeep then hopped back in. As they attempted to drive away, the 33-year-old began firing back.

Officials say the man and boy then ran into a nearby home. They were taken to a hospital where the man died a few hours later. The boy is expected to be OK.

Police recovered a firearm inside a home.

What led to the shooting is not yet known.

About three hours earlier, a 25-year-old was shot and killed in Olney.

Police say he was shot multiple times in the chest and hand on North 6th Street. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died about 20 minutes later.
