PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Ensemble Arts Philly’s next show “& Juliet” reimagines a Shakespearean tragedy with modern pop music.

Rachel Simone Webb, who plays Juliet, called the show a “tragedy turned comedy.” The story picks up at the end of “Romeo and Juliet” when Juliet finds Romeo dead.

“And so basically, what happens if Juliet doesn't die in that moment, she chooses life, and she chooses to run away from the oppression of her family and try to find love on her own,” explained Webb.

It’s a coming-of-age story about the teenage Juliet finding love, but also finding herself — all told through pop songs originally performed by artists like Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, and Katy Perry.

“She puts the dagger down and sings, 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' by Britney Spears to mourn him.”

She added that the moment is both dramatic and comedic — like many of the other pop songs throughout the show. The production features music by songwriter Max Martin, originally performed by artists like the Backstreet Boys and Katy Perry.

Webb said audiences connect with Juliet’s journey and with the characters they see on stage.

“I think that because of the love and the joy and the inclusivity … in the show, I think that people need it,” said Webb.

“& Juliet” will be at the Academy of Music from March 25 to April 6.

Tickets are available on Ensemble Arts Philly’s website.
