PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Fairmount Park Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation have launched a legacy donor program to help support and maintain a forthcoming playground in South Philadelphia.
The Anna C. Verna Playground is still being built in FDR Park. The 2-acre park is named after the late City Council president — the first woman to serve in Philadelphia City Council.
It is expected to open toward the end of August and will include the largest swing set in North America.
The agencies created the Park Legacy Program to help fund it. Donors’ names or the names of their loved ones will be adorned on different pieces of the park, including swing sets, benches and trees.
“The 27 Skyline Swings are available for $10,000 each,” said Meg Holscher, Fairmount Park Conservancy chief development officer. “The 11 custom benches are available for $5,000 each. The trees are $2,500 each, and with your tax-deductible donation you’ll receive a certificate but you will also have a custom plaque installed at the site.”

Verna was from South Philadelphia and grew up playing in the park. Holscher said she understood the “important role that our parks play and make Philadelphia a great place in which to live, work and play.”
