ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — After being delayed for a year due to litigation and a review by the Trump administration, the Atlantic Avenue Improvement Project in Atlantic City is scheduled to get underway this fall.

Atlantic City will start accepting construction bids on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Once that process is over and selections have been made, work on Atlantic Avenue will get underway, most likely in mid-October. It will take about a year to complete.

“This is a $17.3 million project; $10.3 million is coming from the federal government. The rest is coming from eight federal grants that the city has acquired over the last few years,” said Jim Rotella, Atlantic City planning consultant and grants administrator.

Atlantic Avenue, which runs parallel to the boardwalk, is one of the most dangerous roads in South Jersey. Rotella said the project will improve the safety and quality of life for residents and visitors.

“There are going to be 200 new decorative pedestrian lights along the street to make the streets safer,” he said. “Handicap access at all of the intersections, which do not exist now, to comply with the federal laws and state laws. Way-finding signs to make it easier for visitors and residents to find their way around Atlantic Avenue — where to turn and where not to turn, where the side streets are.”

The first phase of the project will include milling, paving, striping, lighting replacement and traffic signal synchronization.
