SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — After plan A was rejected by the state, Atlantic City is moving on to plan B for how to handle the issues of homelessness and substance abuse. Mayor Marty Small has created a new department to tackle old problems.

The newly formed Boardwalk Improvement Group (BIG) is hiring staffers to provide outreach and assistance in getting more resources to people experiencing homelessness.

Small said Atlantic City didn’t create the problem, but it’s theirs to solve nonetheless.

“And I say it all the time: Greyhound therapy. Municipalities near and far send their less fortunate to the great city of Atlantic City and say figure it out. Why?” he asked.

Small says the reason is because Atlantic City offers top-notch social services. His first option was to move those services, which act as a magnet, out of the city, but the state rejected that plan.

Anyone interested in joining BIG is encouraged to seek out job postings online and apply.
