What you need to know about the new Atlantic City Electric smart meters coming this month

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Atlantic City Electric will soon begin the process of replacing every customers’ electric meter with a high-tech smart meter. The utility company’s goal is to help people better manage their energy consumption.

The smart meters will allow customers to use a mobile app to track how much energy they use, hour by hour, and adjust their habits at home to perhaps save some money.

Atlantic City Electric spokeswoman Amber Burruezo says there’s a lot of work ahead, with more than a half-million meters to replace. She says there will be plenty of notices in the mail before it’s time to install the new meter.

“We will be working with our contractor CCI, and customers can expect a CCI crew to come on-site. They will knock on their door that day, letting them know that this is going to be taking place.”

Burruezo says the meters will have better connectivity, making targeted electrical service restoration efforts easier by showing the utility exactly where the homes without electricity are.

“And once that meter is exchanged, you’re good to go,” Burruezo said. “And the technology and the capabilities of the meter will be turned on in phases as we work our way through the communities.”

Work is set to begin in Cape May County in September, migrating north and west from there all the way through 2024, until the company’s entire coverage area is complete.
