Philadelphia’s BalletX returns to full in-person schedule

Some spring season performances will be indoors, with nine world premieres

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A beloved Philadelphia ballet company has released a spring schedule that returns its focus on in-person performances.

BalletX recently unveiled their spring lineup, which will mix indoor and outdoor shows. Performances are scheduled for the Mann Center, the Wilma Theater, and Glen Foerd.

"We’re commissioning nine world premieres by some of the most sought-after choreographers including Jamar Roberts, who is resident choreographer at Alvin Ailey (American Dance Theater)," said BalletX Artistic and Executive Director Christine Cox.

"This is a really exciting season. We have so many different voices. These choreographers have really unique perspectives, and they're just sharing their own stories. So we're all coming out of a storm together, and I think one theme I'm hearing and seeing from the choreographers is love."

She said that over the last few years, they have had a focus on outdoor and digital shows.

"We built an online platform called BalletX Beyond and we commissioned over 27 dance films," Cox explained.

"We also continued to create world premiere ballets, and we commissioned six world premiere ballets last year that we performed on stage."

Cox said that even in previous heights of the pandemic, they never faltered in their mission to bring ballet to the masses. They just changed how they got that message out.

"I really felt a deep commitment to discover and keep people inspire," she said.

Cox says even though they are once again putting a major focus on live performances, they are still producing online content, and for those live indoor performances, proof of COVID-19 vaccination is mandatory.
