HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — At least two cats in New Jersey have tested positive for bird flu.

The animals in Hunterdon County are the first feline cases in the state.

The state Department of Health says one feral cat began to show serious symptoms, so it had to be euthanized.

An indoor-outdoor cat also tested positive and tests on other cats are pending.

It's unclear how the cats got the disease, but officials says they were able to roam free, so they might have encountered wild birds.

So far, no people in New Jersey have shown any signs of the disease.

Officials say anyone who suspects their cat may have bird flu should call their veterinarian immediately.
