Camden County offering $1,000 stipends to pandemic caregivers

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — People who work or worked as caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible for a $1,000 check in Camden County.

About $1.2 million is available through the American Rescue Plan. The Camden County grant is eligible for caregivers, nurses aids, home health care workers and others who directly help the elderly, people with disabilities and children.

“It’s not a lot, but $1,000 is something that will make a difference, we hope, in the lives of many people,” said Camden County Commissioner Ed McDonnell.

He said it’s a small way they can thank those in often thankless jobs.

“When most of us were working remotely, these folks were going to work every day, caring for our loved ones, doing very, very difficult jobs,” he added.

“They got up and faced the danger. Many of them got COVID themselves. Many of them got COVID more than once. And yet, they persisted and went to work every day and did their jobs.”

To be eligible, the applicant must live in or provide hands-on care for someone in Camden County and show evidence of at least 500 hours worked between March 2020 and March 2022.

Applications for the program can be found at camdencountycaregrant.com, or people can call 856-389-6704 for more information.
