CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Pre-kindergarten is free in Camden and there are still hundreds of openings for students. School officials went door to door in the Creamer Hill neighborhood Thursday morning to let families know.
About two-dozen staffers from the Camden City School District’s office of early childhood education knocked on doors, hung up fliers and told anyone who would listen that free pre-K slots are open right now for 3- and 4-year-olds.
“We chose this area because there are a few programs around here that are not yet full,” explained Markeeta Nesmith, the program director, “so we kind of just wanted to make our presence known and let them know that we’re here.”
The group fanned out and focused on some recently built condos and apartments where people may be new to town. “We try to wrap services around our families as best we can so that we can help meet the needs of various family dynamics that are represented across the city,” Nesmith said.
Children who will be 3 years old on or before Oct. 1 are eligible to enroll.
