NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — The Camden Loop micro-transit program just received $2 million in state funding to keep the initiative rolling.
The program, which began in 2023, allows passengers to book a ride to a doctor’s appointment, the grocery store, a loved one or anywhere in the city for just $2.
The fleet has eight vehicles, and recently, Camden Mayor Vic Carstarphen got behind one to see firsthand how it works.
“They were shocked, they looked at me and I said, ‘I’m here, I’m at your service,’” Carstarphen said.
Carstarphen says the program is a lifeline for residents, including one woman who often provides at-home care for her grandmother across town.
“Every day, like clockwork, certain people, their schedule revolves around the Camden Loop helping them,” he said.
There are currently more than 15,000 registered users, and Carstarphen expects the rate to increase as more people learn about the program.
“It puts a smile on everybody’s face. It’s just, again, everyone working together for the greater good, and it gives me much excitement,” Carstarphen said.
Camden Loop is available for IOS and Android in the App Store.
