PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — To prevent the spread of rabies in wildlife in Cape May County, thousands of vaccine-laden bait cubes will be air-dropped over wooded areas starting next month.

County officials said the distribution of more than 30,000 rabies baits will be completed over a two- to three-week period.

The fish-scented, waxy packets contain the oral rabies vaccine, and the goal of the program is to get critters like raccoons, skunks and foxes to eat them so rabies infections can be reduced.

Officials said the bait is generally safe for humans and pets, but the public is urged to avoid baited areas and keep pets away.

Health department experts noted that rabies can be fatal. If you or your pet is bitten or scratched by a wild animal, it’s important to see a doctor or veterinarian immediately.
