PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A U.S. senator and congressman, both from Pennsylvania, are requesting an audit of the Philadelphia Processing and Distribution Center by the United States Postal Service. Six Philly post offices are also part of the audit.
Sen. Bob Casey and Philadelphia-based Rep. Dwight Evans recently announced that after years of complaints from customers, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) will be conducting an audit evaluating the efficiency of operations at the Philadelphia Processing and Distribution Center and the Delaware Processing and Distribution Center.
Last month, the two sent a letter urging USPS Inspector General Tammy L. Whitcomb to address a long list of issues.
“They’ve had all kinds of problems at the postal service, especially Germantown,” said Casey.
“We wrote a letter to (the) postmaster general and inspector general for the Postal Service.”
As part of this audit, the OIG is asked to investigate mail theft, mail delivery delays, customer service, and property conditions at six select post offices in the Philadelphia and Delaware area, including Logan Station, Germantown Station, and North Philadelphia Station in Philadelphia.
“This can bring some accountability to the Postal Service in terms of the problems they’ve had in Germantown and other places in Pennsylvania,” said Casey.
Residents have reported claims of mail being delivered weeks or months late, lost packages, and opened envelopes with money and gift cards removed among other issues.
The senator hopes this audit will hopefully lead to reforms, so the postal service can provide the quality of services it should.
