CDC panel backs Pfizer's COVID-19 booster shot

This follows the FDA's thumbs-up Wednesday for people 65 and older and for those at high risk

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — We're now on the verge of millions receiving booster doses of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine.

A CDC advisory panel Thursday backed Pfizer's COVID-19 booster shots for millions of older or high-risk Americans.

The FDA late Wednesday gave the green light for a third dose of the Pfizer shot for people 65 and older, and for those at high risk.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices panel reviewed safety data collected from the millions of Americans who have already received additional doses of vaccine.

CBS News Medical Contributor Dr. David Agus said they are also looking at research from overseas.

"My hope is that there's clarity when the CDC and ACIP meet and that we can get some further definition of what these are, but it's a very broad endorsement of the Pfizer COVID-19 booster," Agus said.

The advisory panel recommended the extra doses for people 65 and older, nursing home residents, and people who are 50 to 64 with underlying medical conditions.

It also said boosters can be offered to people ages 18 to 49 with underlying conditions. The shots would be given at least six months after the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
