PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — This summer, the Chestnut Hill Free Library is hosting family-friendly gardening events in its new horticultural space.

The Free Library is hoping to cultivate children’s love of agriculture and literature.

"We have a wide variety and we have a good selection going," said Prather O'Donnell, who is a children's librarian there.

But she wasn't talking about books.

She was talking about plants...plant cuttings to be specific.

Now that summer is on the way, the Free Library is welcoming families to their new weekly plant exchange, involving a plant-cutting swap every Wednesday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. at 8711 Germantown Avenue.

"People from the community, anyone can come by, bring a plant cutting and they can swap it out for a different kind of plant," said O'Donnell.

"We’re trying to get people excited about gardening, about horticulture and introduce them to the new horticulture collection that we started at the Chestnut Hill library."

However, guests will not be allowed in the main sections of the library due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"There’s going to be a little family activities section, where parents can pick up a little nature craft to do each week with their kids," O'Donnell explained.

There will still be the library's focus on books.

"We will also be participating in the summer reading program. So every week kids can come by to talk with me, the children’s librarian, about what they’ve been reading," said O'Donnell.

Kids can also choose from a large selection of art supplies and gardening activities to share with their families.
