SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities said a child riding an electric dirt bicycle was killed after they slammed into the back of a UPS truck in Burlington County, New Jersey.
New Jersey State Police said it happened just before 11 a.m. Tuesday on Tranquility Court, near Route 70, in Southampton Township. The child hit the right rear of a UPS truck and was ejected from the bike, suffering fatal injuries.
Police have not yet identified the victim or given the child's exact age.
A UPS spokesperson said the company is heartbroken by the tragedy and sends its thoughts and prayers to the family and loved ones of the victim.
The spokesperson also said UPS is fully cooperating with authorities and that an investigation is ongoing.
E-bike safety has been at the top of mind for lawmakers in New Jersey. A law signed earlier this year required e-bike riders to be at least 15 years old with a valid license, though that doesn’t go into effect until next month.
