The girl’s mother — who was at work — said she received a text from her daughter around 1:15 p.m. that she had arrived home. The girl’s school had a half-day, and three teens walked over to her house on Springton Road in Upper Darby to hang out.
Police said one of the teens, the 14-year-old boy, said he knew the girl’s mom kept a gun in the home. He and one of the other teens went to grab it from a closet and brought it into the bathroom. That’s when, according to the criminal complaint obtained by our newsgathering partners at NBC10, the other teen allegedly placed a magazine inside of it, racked the slide to the rear, then removed the magazine.
The boy said he then took the gun from the other teen, walked into the bedroom where the girl was, and sat next to her on the bed, holding the gun in his right arm.
In the complaint, the boy claimed the girl then grabbed his right arm and placed the barrel of the gun against her head before grabbing his index finger and placing it on the trigger. The gun discharged and struck the girl in the head. The boy told police he did not know a bullet was in the chamber.
He then fled the home with one of the other teens before he ran back inside and grabbed the third to come with them. A witness said they heard a gunshot followed by a scream and notified 911, as well as the girl’s mother.
Around 1:40 p.m., officials arrived at the scene and said they found the girl on her back on the bed. The handgun was to the left of her body. Paramedics performed lifesaving measures before taking her to a nearby hospital, where she died.
The Upper Darby School District said it is working with Upper Darby police as they look further into the incident.
“We ask that everyone keep the family of our 14-year-old victim in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” police said.
Upper Darby School District Superintendent Daniel P. McGarry shared resources with parents about discussing the consequences of playing with guns and the grieving process after violent events. On Friday, professionals were available at Beverly Hills Middle School — where the girl attended — to lend support to those beginning the grieving process.
Adam Garber is the CEO of CeaseFire PA, an anti-gun violence advocacy group, and said that if you have a gun in the home, keeping it locked away is paramount.
“You don’t want any unauthorized individual — especially a child — getting access to that firearm,” he said. “The American Academy of Pediatrics and experts recommend always securing your firearm, ideally unloaded.”
Options include a lockbox or cable lock that will prevent your gun from firing.
