TRENTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Two children were killed in a row home fire in Trenton, New Jersey.
Firefighters responded to the row home on Hewitt Street, near Anderson Street, around 4 a.m. Wednesday. Inside, they found a 4-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl.
The children were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they died a short time later.
Two firefighters were also injured. One was treated for heat exhaustion and released from the hospital. The other is being treated for minor burns to his legs.
One adult escaped the home without injuries.
The fire spread to at least one neighboring home, displacing at least 10 residents in total. The American Red Cross is assisting them.
“Our prayers are with the family and the community, and the city will help them pick up the pieces,” said Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora. “They’re going to need new accommodations. They’re going to need new furniture, clothing, food. So the need is great, and we hope people are able to step up and help out.”
The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing, but Gusciora is urging residents to check smoke detectors to make sure they are working properly.
"As we mourn these two young lives, I also urge every Trenton resident to make sure your home has working smoke detectors and that your family has a plan for getting out safely in the event of a fire. Check your smoke detectors today, keep a fire extinguisher accessible, and take care of one another," he said in a statement.
It’s too soon to say whether or not smoke detectors were operational in the home that caught fire.
