PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia’s city controller will conduct a performance audit of the school district at the request of City Council.
Funding the school district has long been a challenge. Its share of revenue from property taxes does not cover its needs. The city has been regularly increasing its contribution, but Mayor Cherelle Parker made a pitch last spring for a “recurring and reliable” funding source through a rideshare tax.
The proposal got wrapped up in council’s anger over a separate, unrelated district plan to close 17 schools. Ultimately, the rideshare tax died, but council promised to try to find a recurring revenue source.
Council President Kenyatta Johnson said the audit will assess how effectively the district uses its revenue.
“We’re not saying there’s any type of wrongdoing happening or funds aren’t being used properly. This is about transparency, accountability, as well as making sure taxpayer dollars are being used efficiently,” Johnson said.
School Board President Reginald Streater said he looks “forward to understanding the scope of the audit and ensuring it’s constructive and focused on helping the district work for students, families and educators.”
Parker said she welcomes the audit because “transparency makes us stronger.” But she added audits can’t solve the district’s financial challenges.
