PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans won’t seek re-election next year, he announced on Monday, opening the way for a primary battle to replace the long-time public servant.
Evans (D-Pa.), who represents the Philadelphia area, was elected to Congress in 2016 after Chaka Fattah was forced to resign in disgrace. Evans had previously served in the Pennsylvania House for 36 years.
Evans is now 71 years old. He had a stroke last year with a prolonged recovery period. He was back at work earlier this year.
In a statement, his office said he will “continue to serve his constituents fully until the end of his term … [and] he will support a smooth transition for his successor.”
Several Philadelphia elected leaders have quietly expressed interest in the seat, including state Sen. Sharif Street.
Street posted a video on social media declaring his interest in running. He said, “Congressman Evans, thank you for your service. Thank you for being a giant in our community. Today, we work on the budget in Philly. Tomorrow, I’m in.”
State Reps. Morgan Cephas and Chris Raab are also said to be considering a run for Evans’ seat.
Evans’ term ends on Jan. 3, 2027.
