Councilman Jones proposes Philly regulation of Airbnbs

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia City Councilman has proposed making his district a pilot project for city regulation of Airbnbs.

Councilman Curtis Jones introduced a bill last week that would prohibit "limited lodging" in the Wynnefield and Parkside areas of the Fourth District. He says he's heard complaints ranging from constant loud parties in Airbnb rentals and "red cups all over the lawn," to outright criminal activity.

"Drug dealers were renting Airbnbs to set up shop, and when it gets too hot, they shut down one Airbnb and move to the next," he said.

Jones said he didn't object to resident homeowners renting out parts of their homes to out-of-town travelers, but the blanket prohibition would force them to get special permission.

"I want every Airbnb to come before the community to talk about things like where it's located, how it's maintained, who cleans up the red cups, and then to make sure those operations are limited to lawful activities," Jones detailed.

The bill will get a committee hearing before the full Council votes on it.
