PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Coyotes have been spotted in Upper Merion Township.

Police say while sightings of these wild animals are not uncommon in the area and attacks on humans are extremely rare, people should exercise caution and keep their distance.

They say coyotes can behave unpredictably if they feel threatened or if they believe someone could be a threat to their young.

Residents are advised to keep pets on a short leash, especially around nighttime when coyotes are most active; use yard lights or motion detectors and make loud noises to frighten them away; and make sure all trash is secured.

If you encounter a coyote, contact the southeast regional office of the Pennsylvania Game Commission at 610-926-3136.

If the coyote appears sick, injured or behaves in a concerning way, call Upper Merion police at 610-265-3232.
