DA Krasner dissatisfied with judge’s sentencing for man convicted of terrorism

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia man convicted of terrorism last year was sentenced Thursday. District Attorney Larry Krasner is dissatisfied with the judge's decision.

"If you sense a certain level of concern and outrage on my part, it is real,” Krasner said.

Krasner is known for reducing the number of people in prison. He is, however, disappointed with the sentence that the judge gave Muhyyee-Ud-din Abdul-Rahman for his role in the attempted production of weapons of mass destruction and possession of explosive materials in 2023.

The District Attorney's Office was asking for 10 to 20 years. Following state guidelines, the judge gave Abdul-Rahman 20 months.

"The state court's sentencing guidelines for no apparent reason are much lower than the federal guidelines for terrorism. Which probably means three guys from white-tailed deer county sat around a table and wrote guidelines they thought were about a kid blowing up a locker. Well, that's not this," Krasner said.

Krasner wants the state to rethink the guidelines.

Prosecutors testified in the trial that Abdul-Rahman was in contact with Syrian extremists and wanted to become a bomb maker, and that one of his intended targets was the Philadelphia Pride Parade.
