PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The founder of Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia charter school has been named the interim president of Girard College.

David Hardy launched Boys’ Latin in 2007, and he’s been a high-profile advocate for charters since then. Hardy has now been tapped as the interim president of Girard College, the Fairmount boarding school for first- through 12th-graders.

He is replacing Christopher Goins, who resigned last month after less than a year on the job. Hardy said Girard's board sought him out to lead the institution during a search for a permanent president.

“This is a unique opportunity,” he said. “This is a very important institution for the city of Philadelphia, an important educational opportunity for the children of Philadelphia, and if I can do anything to help that along, I’m honored to do it.”

Hardy, 71, has been a leading advocate for school choice at the conservative Commonwealth Foundation. He’s excited about the interim opportunity at Girard but stresses he’s not seeking a permanent job.

“I’m committed to working at the job at Girard College. But I remain a senior fellow at the Commonwealth Foundation,” he assured. “As soon as this job is over, I’ll be going right back to the Commonwealth Foundation.

“Stability is absolutely essential for the school, as it is for any school,” he added. “We want to be a place that can attract great students, great faculty and great staff.”

Hardy begins his interim president role next week.
