PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The man accused of shooting at Montgomery County police officers early Wednesday morning has been charged with attempted murder.

Authorities announced charges against 62-year-old David Naumenko, who, they say, fired multiple times at two officers at the Meadowview Condominium complex in Mont Clare.

Police were called to the complex around 3 a.m. by Naumenko’s wife, who said he was having a mental breakdown. The caller told the 911 operator that Naumenko “has guns” and was leaving their home but was “harmless.”

Investigators say Naumenko was in his white pickup truck when they arrived, with his wife inside. A responding officer asked, “What’s going on?” and “You all right?”

Within nine seconds, Naumenko began firing at the officer, who was only a few feet away, according to the criminal complaint. The officer said he Naumenko reach for something and he took cover.

One shot grazed the back of his uniform, and another clipped the wire of his police radio.

Naumenko then drove across the parking lot, where he was met by another patrol car. He fired at the car, striking it multiple times. He also crashed into several parked cars.

Both officers were able to take cover and did not fire back. They were not injured.

A third officer was able to access a second-story apartment window. As Naumenko reloaded, the officer fired and shot him in the arm. SWAT officials took him into custody.

Investigators found multiple guns, magazines and boxes of ammunition in Naumenko’s truck and home. He has eight weapons registered in his name but does not have a permit to carry.

The complaint says Naumenko’s wife told police that her husband has been taking opiates for back pain and was smoking marijuana. She said he began gathering the guns, saying, “They needed to go meet people,” without explaining who those people were.

Naumenko is charged with two counts of attempted murder of an officer, aggravated assault, risking catastrophe and related offenses. His bail was set at $2 million cash, and he remains in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
