UPPER DARBY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A 45-year-old man, who is accused of killing his girlfriend on Thursday, then going on a shooting spree near the 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby, has been charged with murder and related offenses.

Authorities say David Savage shot and killed his girlfriend, Latoya Gary, inside an apartment near the train station before going on a shooting rampage.

Family members were there when Gary was killed, officials say.

“This was a brutal, brutal murder. This is what evil looks like,” said Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer on Friday.

Savage was involved in a shootout with SEPTA cops before he was taken into custody.

One innocent bystander on Market Street was shot in the back, but officials say he only suffered a non-life-threatening injury. His identity has not been released.

Savage also faces four counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault, “for actually wounding one person, shooting at two SEPTA police officers, who are the heroes of this story, and shooting at another person outside of the SEPTA terminal,” added Stollsteimer.

Savage has a criminal record in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, including charges of assault and terroristic threats.

“I believe 100% that this was an [attempted] suicide by police,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt. “I believe that Mr. Savage — in statements and his actions — he wanted police to take his life.”
