PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was killed and two others were critically wounded during a shooting that happened inside a ballroom in the Frankford section of Philadelphia Monday night.

Around 10 p.m., police were called to the area of Frankford Avenue and Overington Street. Officers found two men outside a building with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. The victims, believed to be in their 30s, were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses told police that a third victim was inside a first-floor ballroom. The 29-year-old man was bleeding heavily and unresponsive. He was shot multiple times and eventually died at the hospital.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said there was evidence in the ballroom that at least 40 shots were fired.

“Most of the bullet holes are actually in the doors and in the glass and the walls,” Small said. “So we know at least two separate caliber weapons were used. It appears that there may have been some sort of shootout.”

Police said most of the shots came from a rifle and the rest were from a handgun. Investigators found a handgun near the victim in the ballroom, which they believe belonged to him.

A motive was not immediately clear, and no one was arrested.

Between eight and 10 people were at a bar in the rear of the ballroom, Small said. Police were in the process of questioning them.

There are other bars in the building, along with apartments, a hair studio and a recording studio on the upper floors. Police said they are reviewing surveillance footage as they look for answers.
