DARBY BOROUGH, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A mayor in Delaware County is facing assault charges after he allegedly punched a borough council member at a meeting two weeks ago.
Darby Borough Mayor Darren Burrell’s seat was empty at Wednesday night’s council meeting, following his arrest on Tuesday. Burrell is accused of hitting Councilmember Omar Thompson at a meeting two weeks ago.
According to a police report, witnesses said Burrell assaulted him after a heated discussion. The complaint says after the public left, Burrell wanted to talk with Thompson.
Burrell allegedly got up, hit Thompson with a closed fist and grabbed at him, causing Thompson to fall.
According to the police complaint, Thompson had to go to the hospital and was treated for a concussion and minor injuries.
“I want to make it clear: There is no excuse for violence in this body, or in this life. The minute we sit on this podium, sometimes we engage in vigorous debate about contingent issues. But we just always remain civil,” said Council President Rudolph Taylor III at the beginning of Wednesday's meeting.
“Today, we may be in a dark place in our borough’s history. But we will get through it, and brighter days are ahead by focusing on what matters for Darby.”
The criminal complaint states Burrell is facing several charges, including harassment and simple assault.
Burrell has been released on bond. He did not initially respond to KYW Newsradio’s request for comment.
