Carney had reinstated the universal mask mandate on Jan. 11 amid the omicron surge of COVID-19 cases. Masks have since been required by the state in indoor public settings like convenience stores, grocery stores, gyms, restaurants, bars, hair salons, malls and casinos.

The governor temporarily extended masking in public and private schools and child care facilities. However, he said the requirement will come to an end on March 31.

The extension gives parents time to get their children vaccinated, the governor’s office said, as well as give school districts time to consider their own masking rules.
