DOVER (KYW Newsradio) — Friday is the day Delawareans have been waiting for, after 14 months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The state has lifted most capacity restrictions, and masks for fully vaccinated people are no longer required in many situations.
There's no way to easily tell if someone got their COVID-19 shots or not, so the state is relying on the honor system to enforce that.
"We're not going to be in the business of asking people for vaccine passports, so you know who's vaccinated and who's not," said Governor John Carney.
"Recognizing there are challenges, with respect mostly with enforcement, because you don't know who is vaccinated and who is not."
He just hopes people who aren't fully vaccinated do the right thing and keep their masks on when they're supposed to. He plans to do that in some settings, even though he's received both his shots.
"I know when I go into my Wawa every morning, I'm going to wear my mask, just so it's clear that that's a place that's safe, and frankly not to stigmatize those folks who aren't vaccinated," he said.
He explained that businesses still have the option to require masks if they would like.
"They have and can have a mask mandate in their facilities and I suspect that some will," Carney added.
If you go into a place where that's the case, Carney asks you respect those wishes.
