PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Rail congestion, equipment shortages and signal issues are just some of the problems Amtrak says it's working around the clock to fix as frustrated passengers pack train stations to head to their holiday destination.
Amtrak’s problems began Sunday when downed power lines brought service to a halt for most of the day. While those issues have been resolved, Amtrak says all trains operating between Washington Union Station and Boston South Station may still be impacted Monday “due to ongoing and residual issues along the Northeast Corridor.” To minimize delays, select services were canceled.
Most trains have delays of at least an hour.
Marianna, who is heading to Massachusetts from Philly’s 30th Street Station to see family, is trying to keep her spirits high.
“Well, I got an Uber really early, so I have been here … but I don't mind it. You have food and snacks in a bathroom and you can make friends and talk to people,” Marianna said.
Joanna, who arrived in Philly Monday evening to spend time with her daughter, had delays and minor inconveniences on the way in.
“It was overbooked,” she said. “There were signaling issues coming into Philly, so we were close to an hour delayed getting in.”
Amtrak said there’s no estimate for when service will return back to normal.
