MEDIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A Delaware County businessman faces more than 200 charges after officials say he ripped off people trying to buy gravestones for their loved ones. Law enforcement officials want others who may have been victimized to come forward.
Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer says that for the last nine years, Greg Stefan Jr. took money from people, promised to deliver headstones to their loved ones' graves and never delivered the product.
"It's really a horrible case, victimizing people at one of the most awful times of their life, when they lost a loved one," said Stollsteimer.
Stollsteimer says more than 60 people have come forward claiming to have ordered from him and paid deposits. "We charged him earlier this week with over 280 counts of theft and deceptive business practices," he said.
The district attorney's office says it's been able to document more than $200,000 worth of theft from Stefan dating back at least nine years. Stollsteimer says he made the deals through his family's business — and that Stefan's crimes stretch further than Delaware County.
"There [are] also pending charges in the state of New Jersey," he said, "and other agencies are also looking at him in this region as well."
Stollsteimer warns people to not do business with Stefan, who he says is facing years in jail as well as restitution to dozens of people.
