ASTON, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Campaigns for both presidential candidates stumped around the Philadelphia region all weekend as a final push to get people to the polls.
Former first lady Michelle Obama was joined by singer-songwriter Alicia Keys in Norristown Saturday for a Harris-Walz rally, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, campaigned Sunday in Philadelphia’s Wynnefield Heights neighborhood.
Some miles away in Aston, Delaware County, Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance spoke to supporters of his ticket with former President Donald Trump.
“You know what Donald J. Trump’s closing argument is?” he asked the crowd. “That we want every person — whether you vote for us or not, whether you agree with our politics — we want to unleash a golden age of American prosperity for all of our citizens because we love this country and that means loving the people that live here.”
During his speech, Vance took jabs at his opponent for the VP position, Tim Walz, but mainly focused on Harris.
“We know that Kamala Harris is the candidate of more of the same. More of the same of our fellow citizens not being able to afford groceries, more of the same of our young people not being able to afford the American dream of homeownership. More of our communities flooded with fentanyl brought in by the Mexican drug cartels,” he said. “Are we ready to take this country in a different direction?”
Vance touted Trump’s previous time in the Oval Office and also remarked on President Joe Biden’s recent comment in which he called Trump supporters “garbage.” Biden was responding to racist comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at last week’s Madison Square Garden Trump rally, who referred to the U.S. island territory of Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”
Vance said on Sunday, “Don’t let them say that we are bad people because we think that Kamala Harris is doing a bad job. So here’s my message to Kamala Harris: We are not garbage for thinking that you have done a bad job, but in two days, we’re going to take out the trash in Washington, D.C.”
Harris was not in the region over the weekend but will use the Philadelphia Museum of Art as her backdrop for her election eve rally and concert Monday night.
Trump is expected to also hold a rally in Pittsburgh Monday night.
