PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you’re a resident in Delaware County that received a hang tag on your door last weekend, you might want to think twice before you discard it.

They carry a special message you can use to help the less fortunate.

The Souper Bowl of Caring is an annual event where residents can give back to their neighbors in need.

It started as a neighborhood event and has since gone nationwide.

“[A] group of teenagers who saw this economic disparity between the amount of money that was being spent on the Super Bowl advertising and Super Bowl parties and then the members of their communities that didn’t even have a bowl of soup,” said Diana Esposito, a deacon at Covenant United Methodist Church, one of the Delaware County participants.

She said they spent last weekend putting hangers on doors around the county asking them to donate canned food and non-perishable items.

This upcoming weekend, they’ll go back to those houses to collect any items left for donation.

“Many individuals in Delco still struggle for their next meal and the fact that community members rise up together to say it’s not okay for folks to be hungry, it’s not okay for children to go without a meal, it’s really inspiring. My goal is that no stomach is hungry,” she shared.

Esposito said, last year, they were able to gather more than 41 thousand pounds of food, to help the one in six residents suffering from food insecurity.

Contributions donated go to a number of local food pantries.

If you live in Delaware County and did not get a tag on your front door but would like to get involved by donating food, here is a list of drop-off sites.
